Actually, health insurers in Florida did not make record profits last year.

But the state's seven largest companies did realize more than half a billion dollars in profit from their Florida business, according to a review of annual financial statements filed with the state. Jacksonville-based Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida recorded $182.1 million in profit from Florida. Louisville-based Humana Inc. made $134.7 million in Florida. Aetna Inc.'s statewide operations chalked up $100 million in profits.

In all, the seven insurers, which represent 71 percent of the state's health insurance market, realized profits of $550 million.
